Once the engine is warm and the monitor conditions are met, the powertrain computer compares oxygen behavior before and after the catalytic converter. A working converter stores oxygen and smooths the downstream response. When the measured efficiency falls below the vehicle’s calibrated threshold, it stores P0420.
The same result can be distorted by an exhaust leak, sensor/circuit fault, misfire, rich or lean operation, oil or coolant contamination, incorrect replacement part, or model-specific calibration. That is why the plan checks upstream causes before condemning the most expensive part.
