    P0420 is a monitor result, not a parts order.

    Once the engine is warm and the monitor conditions are met, the powertrain computer compares oxygen behavior before and after the catalytic converter. A working converter stores oxygen and smooths the downstream response. When the measured efficiency falls below the vehicle’s calibrated threshold, it stores P0420.

    The same result can be distorted by an exhaust leak, sensor/circuit fault, misfire, rich or lean operation, oil or coolant contamination, incorrect replacement part, or model-specific calibration. That is why the plan checks upstream causes before condemning the most expensive part.

    Can I drive with P0420?

    A steady light with normal operation is often compatible with a short, gentle trip to a shop. A flashing light, overheating, smoke/burning smell, severe power loss or stalling changes that answer: pull over safely and arrange inspection or towing.

    Does P0420 always mean a bad catalytic converter?

    No. The converter is a real and common suspect, but the code can also be influenced by leaks, sensor/circuit faults, misfires, mixture problems, contamination, incorrect replacement parts or calibration. Test the system before ordering parts.

    Should I replace the downstream O2 sensor first?

    Not automatically. A sensor should be replaced when its response, heater, circuit or plausibility test supports that decision. A code mentioning catalyst efficiency is not itself proof the sensor failed.

    Will clearing P0420 fix it or help an inspection?

    Clearing removes useful freeze-frame evidence and resets readiness monitors; it does not repair the cause. Save the data first and follow the applicable inspection rules rather than trying to hide the monitor result.

    Could the converter be under warranty?

    In the U.S., specified major emissions components have a federal 8-year/80,000-mile warranty framework. Exact coverage depends on in-service date, failure cause and manufacturer terms, so check the warranty booklet or dealer before paying.

    Why did P0420 return after a new converter?

    Verify exact fitment and emissions certification, leaks, sensor placement and the engine fault that may have damaged the original converter. In California, the converter must be approved for the exact vehicle and engine family.
